Summer EC course offerings

posted Mar 29, 2013, 9:40 AM by LaWanda Albright

Early educators interested in Early Childhood Program Administration can take classes in person this summer at the Gadsden branch of Doña Ana Community College or on-line this fall through Doña Ana.   Central NM Community College (CNM) in Albuquerque is offering a Program Administration class in person this summer.  (See section on the Program Administration Concentration below.)

Courses in the new Family-Infant-Toddler (FIT) Concentration of the Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education are being offered on-line through CNM.  (See section on the FIT Concentration below.)  The concentration is designed for future or current home visitors, early interventionists and Early Head Start teachers.  A new cohort starts in Fall 2013.

An Early Childhood Higher Education Professional Development web site that has valuable information is located at http://education.nmsu.edu/projects/cyfd/ .  The links for course schedules at institutions are outdated, but much other information is good.

The institutions offering on-line classes also have face-to-face classes in early childhood, of course.  I am including here primarily the on-line classes.   Also included are classes available at various sites by satellite and hybrid classes (marked as such) in which part of the classes are face-to-face and part on-line.

Many of these higher education institutions offer various general education classes – such as history, psychology, English, math and science classes – on-line as well.  Check colleges’ individual web sites under distance education for those courses.

A person needs to apply for admission to take a class on-line at a college he or she is not enrolled in.  It can be done as a non-degree student – which is usually simpler (not involving transcripts) – if the person plans to transfer credit back to a home college.  Getting admission to the college should be done as soon as possible through the web site of the institution.  On-line classes often fill up quickly.

It is important to talk with early education faculty at the student’s home institution for advice about the best way to complete a degree and to check on prerequisites that may be required for courses.  For instance, a student cannot take Bachelor Degree level courses in early childhood before Associate level ones are completed.

A standard curriculum of early childhood classes is in place at virtually all public New Mexico higher education institutions, which makes transfer of classes from one college to another relatively easy.  Depending on availability of grant money, T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® Scholarships are available for people seeking degrees in Early Childhood Education and for any of the classes listed here.  You may email dan@nmaeyc.org for more information or call 1-505-243-5437.

Here are the early childhood education classes offered on-line in the Summer 2013 Semester.  Associate Degree classes are listed first, followed by Family-Infant-Toddler Concentration classes, Administrative Certificate classes, Alternative Licensure classes, Bachelor's Degree classes, Master's Degree classes and doctoral classes.

BS in Advance Caregiving for Infants and Toddlers

posted Dec 21, 2012, 4:03 PM by LaWanda Albright

Eastern NM University in Portales is offering a Bachelor Degree course in Advanced Caregiving for Infants and Toddlers on line in the Spring 2013 semester.   The class is part of the new statewide Bachelor track for classroom teachers for birth through age 4 -- for which a person can get licensure or not, depending on whether the person wants to do student teaching and get licensure or not.   The track was set up in part so that Head Start teachers could get an Early Childhood Education degree without having to do student teaching or get state teacher licensure.   (ENMU is working on Bachelor level classes to offer on line for the Family-Infant-Toddler, FIT, pathway also but this class is part of the classroom teacher track, not FIT.   This course could be taken as a FIT pathway elective, or for professional development, however.)

Attached is a booklet about NM's professional development pathways for early care and education staff, including the four college pathways for the Early Childhood Education degree -- Teachers (birth through age 4) with or without teacher licensure; teachers (age 3 through grade 3) with teacher licensure; early childhood program administration; and family-infant-toddler (FIT) for home visitors and early interventionists).    In the booklet, you can see where the Advanced Caregiving for Infants and Toddlers class fits into the Bachelor path for teachers (birth through Age 4).

The class is FCS 493, Advanced Caregiving for Infants and Toddlers, and costs about $544 for the 3-credit-hour class.  The CRN number, needed for registration, is CRN 28326.

If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Robin Wells at ENMU.   Her email is Robin.Wells@enmu.edu

Fall 2012 EC classes

posted Jun 12, 2012, 3:26 PM by LaWanda Albright

(Compiled by T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® NEW MEXICO)

Courses in the new Family-Infant-Toddler (FIT) Concentration of the Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education again will be offered on-line through Central New Mexico Community College starting in the Fall 2012 semester.  (See section on the FIT Concentration below.)  The concentration is designed for future or current home visitors, early interventionists and Early Head Start teachers.

An Early Childhood Higher Education Professional Development web site that has valuable information is located at http://education.nmsu.edu/projects/cyfd/     The links for course schedules at institutions are outdated, but much other information is good.

The institutions offering on-line classes also have face-to-face classes in early childhood, of course. I am including here primarily the on-line classes.   Also included are classes available at various sites by satellite and hybrid classes (marked as such) in which part of the classes are face to face and part on-line.

Many of these higher education institutions offer many general education classes – such as history, psychology, English, math and science classes – on line as well.  Check colleges’ individual web sites under distance education for those courses.

A person needs to apply for admission to take a class on-line at a college he or she is not enrolled in.  It can be done as a non-degree student -- which is usually simpler (not involving transcripts) -- if the person plans to transfer credit back to a home college.

Here are the early childhood education classes offered on-line in the Fall Semester.  Associate Degree classes are listed first, followed by Family-Infant-Toddler Concentration classes, Administrative Certificate classes, Alternative Licensure classes, Bachelor's Degree classes, Master's Degree classes and doctoral classes.

Summer 2012 – On-Line Classes

Summer 2012 – On-Line Classes

In Early Childhood Education in New Mexico

(Compiled by T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® NEW MEXICO)

Increasingly, classes are being offered on line in Early Childhood Education.  Here is a list of  Early Childhood Education classes available for the Summer 2012 semester.

Courses in the new Family-Infant-Toddler (FIT) Concentration of the Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education again will be offered on-line through Central New Mexico Community College in Fall 2012, but not in Summer 2012.  (See section on the FIT Concentration below.)  The concentration is designed for future or current home visitors and early interventionists.

Here are the early childhood education classes offered on-line in the Summer Semester.  Associate Degree classes are listed first, followed by Family-Infant-Toddler Concentration classes, Administrative Certificate classes, Alternative Licensure classes, Bachelor's Degree classes, Master's Degree classes and doctoral classes.

Central New Mexico Community College

CNM does not offer the Administrative Credential classes on line, but offers them at times as   face-to-face classes.  No Administrative Credential classes are being offered in Summer 2012.

ALTERNATIVE LICENSURE

Santa Fe Community College

Santa Fe Community College offers classes on line for Alternative Licensure in Early Childhood Education.   A new cohort is expected to start in the Fall 2012 Semester if there are enough students (15).  The program is fully on-line, and usually takes four semesters or completion of 21 credit hours.

Alternative Licensure is for people who already have a Bachelor's Degree in elementary education, special education, child development or family and consumer sciences AND who want a NM Teaching License in early childhood education.

For more information, go to http://www.sfcc.edu/programs/teacher_education/teacher_certification

or contact Jeffrey Holbrook, jeffrey.holbrook@sfcc.edu

Central New Mexico Community College

CNM does NOT offer on-line Alternative Licensure classes, but does offer the classes face to face in Albuquerque.  There has not been a new cohort recently because the applicant pool was restricted by the state to students who have Bachelor Degrees in elementary education, special education, child development or family and consumer science.  (It used to be a wider range of degrees.)   Check with CNM about when there might be a new cohort.  See the Alternative Licensure website for a Student Guide and contact information.  Web site:  www.cnm.edu/teachered

Online Portfolio for Alternative Licensure

Here is the link to the page on the NM Public Education Department web site that outlines what a person needs to complete an online portfolio for alternative licensure in Early Childhood Education.   This is for someone who is already well educated and experienced, and who can demonstrate the required knowledge to get a teaching license.   From what I have heard, it is not a simple, easy process; it requires a great deal of work:    http://teachnm.org/online-portfolio-for-alternative-licensure.html

NM CHILD DEVELOPMENT CERTIFICATE

The NM Office of Child Development offers this certificate, recognized as the equivalent of the national CDA (Child Development Associate) credential, to people who have completed the four basic classes in Early Childhood Education and who apply for the packet of information on other requirements, such as a family survey and professional resource file, similar to the CDA.   The cost of the NM certificate is $50 at time of application.  To get the application packet, please call 505-277-1118.

The four basic classes in Early Childhood Education are Child Growth, Development and Learning; Health, Safety and Nutrition; Family and Community Collaboration; and Assessment of Children and Evaluation of Programs.
